It’s difficult to overstate the benefits of meditating on Scripture, but as we’ve seen, it’s essential for the purpose of understanding, as well as for transforming our minds in the way of godliness.

Memorization

In my view, the last real exercise pertaining to reading is memorization. In doing this, you’re now working to get the Bible into your heart. Of all the verses in the Bible that call for memorization, Psalm 119:11 is surely the most famous. It reads, “Your word I have treasured in my heart, that I may not sin against You.” Some translations render “treasured” as “hidden” or “stored up”—the idea being that the believer has locked the Scripture away deep inside their heart in order to keep it forever. Elsewhere, God told Joshua, “This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it” (Josh. 1:8). The point is clear: If we are to live as Christians, we are to make regular practice of hiding God’s Word in our hearts.

But how do we do this?

The discipline of memorization is the act of committing Scripture to memory in order to be recalled at a later time. As for the best method, there are countless practices that aid in memorization.

Flashcards. This is a tried and true method of learning information. Simply buy a stack of 3x5-inch index cards and write verses out in full, along with the verse address. These are easy to carry in your pocket, or to post up on your bathroom mirror or computer screen at work. The idea is that you can take a few verses with you wherever you go and practice reciting them until you have them locked in your mind.

The Topical Memory System. The Topical Memory System was developed by The Navigators and has been used by countless Christians for decades. Essentially, the system organizes key verses into topics in order to cover key doctrines of Christianity. While the system is not designed to be exhaustive, it serves as a sure-fire way to nail down key verses such as Matthew 28:19–20; John 3:16; Romans 1:16; 3:23; 5:8; 6:23; 10:9–10; Galatians 2:20; Ephesians 2:8–9; and more.

Memorization Apps. Modern technology has produced amazing tools for Bible memorization. These days, there’s an app for everything. While you can certainly learn the Bible by simply reading it on your phone or mobile device, several apps have been created for that purpose. One app that is particularly helpful for memorization is called Bible Memory Pro. It not only helps you learn the verses, but also tracks your progress and includes sharing options so you can give and receive encouragement from friends as you grow.

Be Creative. In the end, you have to know yourself. What works best for you? Not everyone is the same, and there’s no wrong way to memorize the Bible. So be creative. Play games with yourself. Make it fun. One summer I wanted to memorize the whole book of Romans.
